Clockify Full Review and Features

best Time Tracking Apps
Clockify

We’ll cover how to track time with more convenience using a Clockify app. In addition to tracking time in a browser, you can also install Clockify on your computer or phone and track time through there, so you don’t have to keep Clockify open in a tab all the time.
In this article, I’ll tell you how the Chrome extension works. But don’t worry, although the interface might differ between systems, all the apps use the same way.

Clockify Installation

You can install Clockify on Windows, Mac, or Linux; on your iPhone or Android, or you can add it as a Chrome or Firefox extension. To download, just visit the Clockify website, choose your platform, and download. Then install it and log in with the same email and password as on the web. Once you log in, you’ll see all your tracked data, which got synced online.

Clockify Features

Tracking time

You can open the app, start the timer with one click, type what you’re working on, and stop the timer once you’re finished, just like on the web. If you want to restart a timer for a previous activity, you can click on the continue button, and a new timer for that activity will start. In case you forgot to start the timer, you can create one now, click on start time here and change it so it reflects your true start time. You can edit anything by clicking on the time entry and then clicking on what you wish to edit. If you want to manually log time, either for the past or the future, you can switch to manual mode and add the entry that way.

Offline mode

A great thing about the apps is that they also work offline, although with some limited functionality. If you do have an internet connection, but you have the app installed, and you were logged in before you’ve lost the connection, you can still track time. All-time you’ve recovered while offline will be saved on your device, and once you come back online, those entries will be uploaded and synced. If an entry is missing some information, you’ll first have to edit it, after which it’ll sync automatically.

Idle detection

Apps come with a lot of other handy features, like idle detection, reminders, and more. Let’s start with idle detection. Imagine you have a timer running, and you go on a break but forget to stop the timer. Clockify can recognize when you’re away from the computer so you can exclude the inactive time
To enable idle detection: Go to Settings, and specify after how many minutes of inactivity should get the idle detection trigger. So, for example, if I set it to 15, and leave my computer while the timer is running, Clockify will notice when I stop typing or moving the mouse. Then, when I come back after 15 minutes, I’ll get an alert. I can choose to remove those 15minutes and everything after that, or I can keep it by dismissing the warning.
This information is completely private and won’t appear anywhere in Clockify. It also means that if, for example, you leave the computer but are active on your phone, you’ll still get the idle alert when you get back to the computer.

Reminders

Next are reminders. Clockify can remind you to track time when it notices you don’t have a timer running.
To enable reminders, go to Settings and choose on which days you wish to receive them and between which hours. For example, you probably don’t need them after 5 pm on weekends, when you’re off work. This particular setting means that you’ll get a reminder if it’s a weekday, between 9 am and 5 pm, if a timer is currently not running, and more than 10 minutes have passed since your last time entry.

Automatic start/stop

Clockify can also automatically start and stop the timer for you. Enable automatic start or stop in Settings, and then, once you open the browser, the timer will start on its own and stop when you close it at the end of the day.
Another handy feature is the default project. If you work on the same project the whole day, you can set that project as default. Then, each time you start a new timer, the project will be automatically selected. You can also set the “last used” project, and Clockify will choose a project of your most recent entry, which is useful when you frequently switch between activities.

Pomodoro timer

Finally, Clockify comes with a built-in Pomodoro timer. If you’re not familiar with it, Pomodoro is a popular time management technique for improving productivity that entails working for 25minutes straight, followed by a 5-minute break.
Here’s how the Pomodoro technique works in a nutshell. Go to Settings and enable Pomodoro. These settings basically say: you’ll do for 25 minutes, and when the time is up, you’ll take a break for 5 minutes, during which you can stretch or grab a snack. Then you’ll work for 25 minutes again, and so on. After 3 small breaks, you’ll take a more extended 30-minute break for lunch.
Let’s see how this works in practice. You start the timer, and when it reaches25 minutes, you’ll get an alert to take a break. If you don’t want to go on a break just yet, you can just dismiss the alert and continue working. Once you click to start the break, a new time will begin. After 5 minutes, you’ll get an alert to continue working on your previous activity. By introducing this work-break-work pattern, you’ll improve your focus and get more things done.
